Barbarossa figure

Barbarossa

Hızır later to be better known as the great Barbarossa is one of sons of Yakup Aha who settled in the island of Lesbos after its conquest by Mehmed the Conqueror. His exact birth date is not known but it is only assumed to be between years 1466-1483. Hızır had two elder brothers named Ishak and Oruc and a junior brother called Ilyas. Sea trade he began with his brother Oruc later turned into piracy in the harsh conditions of the period and in short time their activities and successes against Genoese, Venetian, Knights of Rhodes and fleets and interests of others brought them great fame. After losing his brother Oruc after 1518, he declared his interest in becoming in the service of Ottomans and this had been accepted by the then Ottoman Sultan Yavuz Selim. Afterwards he gained great victories in the Mediterranean and North Africa. He became the grand admiral of Ottoman navy. His 1538 victory Preveza is one of his greatest successes. He died in 1546 in Istanbul and his tomb is in Istanbul Besiktas.
